Washington Post headline reads: U.S. is denying passports to Americans along the U.S. border....
Readers/commenters jump to conclusion that this is Trump again, and this is racism again. An early commenter says: anyone who supports Trump is supporting a racist, and that is pretty much the same as being a racist.
Turns out: the problem goes back to the Bush Jr. years, and it was Obama who insisted on taking the actions in question. There is reliable evidence to the effect that midwives, if a baby was born in Mexico close to the U.S. border, would acquire a fraudulent U.S. birth certificate so the baby would enjoy birthright citizenship. At least two presidents have rightly taken action. As Althouse says: if it had been Trump, that fact would have been in the headline. As it is, the Post is digging out an old story, hoping readers will conclude from the headline alone, as many did, that this is Trump=racism again.
To borrow from a famous American: Sad. Sad.
